2014 में आतंकी समूह IS ने इराकी सेना को हराकर मोसुल (Mosul) पर कब्जा कर लिया था. शहर को अपने नियंत्रण में लेने के बाद, आईएस ने बंदी बनाए गए लगभग 4,000 इराकी सैनिकों की हत्या कर दी थी.
